My first class was from 9:00 am-10:40 am and it was Premodern Korean History. It seems like there is going to be a lot of reading that I have to do for the class but I think it will be interesting, as I know next to nothing about premodern Korean history. My professor is a woman named Prof. Kim who seems nice enough and knows a lot about the subject.
My second class was from 11:00 am-12:40 pm and it is called World History: The Modern Era. I'm really excited for this class. The teacher, Prof. Denton, seems very enthusiastic about history and he is very nice. I'm particularly excited for this course because it's about world history from a non-Eurocentric point of view, which is something that I have never been exposed to. It seems like I'll have to do a fair amount of reading for this class too but luckily not as much as Premodern Korean History, haha.
A rather gloomy picture I snapped of the main street at Yonsei in between rain storms
After class, I went and got lunch with some friends in the New Millenium Hall, which has a small restaurant inside of it with pretty good Korean food for a really good price. I had jeyuk bokkeum (제육 볶음), which is spicy pork stir-fried with rice. It was really good and only cost me 4,000 won ($4).
After lunch I went back to my dorm and spent some time working on readings I had to do for class tomorrow. The premodern Korean history chapters I had to read were pretty dense but I managed to get through them in a few hours.
I met up with three friends around 5 or 6 and we went and ate Japanese curry at a restaurant that is very close to campus. The meal was pretty good but cost 10,000 won and I don't think the amount of food was worth paying 10,000 won for, as I know many restaurants where I can get more food for less money.
After dinner I went with three girls to a shopping area near Ewha Women's University (이화여자대학교), which is very close to Yonsei (maybe 3-4 minutes walking). I ended up buying a v-neck t-shirt, which I don't normally wear but I decided to buy it on a whim because it was cheap. A lot clothing stores in Korea don't let you try on clothes before you buy them (slightly strange in my opinion) but a lot of stores only sell one size, so there aren't too many options (also odd; I guess one-size-fits-all?). Luckily the shirt fits but my chest hair pokes out and it might be a little bit too 1970s for my tastes, haha.
We headed back to the dorms about 10:00 pm and I finished up the last of my homework just before typing up this blog post. Now I'm off to bed so I can get up early for class tomorrow!
P.S. I also joined the International Yonsei Community (IYC) club today, which is essentially a club you can join as a foreigner to hang out with native Koreans. I'm excited!
