Day 15 - 4th of July

My first class was canceled today because my teacher is out of the country, so I only had World History. I'm really enjoying that class because the teacher is very enthusiastic and interesting.

After class, I went to lunch with a Korean friend that I've met and I had spicy pork and rice. All of the food here in Korea is spicy. An example of a typical meal that I eat is bibimbap with red pepper paste, soup (which may or may not be spicy), kimchi (a spicy side dish made of fermented cabbage), and radishes which will either be pickled or have red pepper paste on them. Luckily, I like spicy food so I'm having a great time eating in Korea, but it sure would be tough for someone who doesn't like spicy things (or meat--which is in everything).

Some Korean side dishes, with kimchi front and center

After lunch I headed into Sinchon to check out a record store that I read about online. It was really dull and had a poor selection of music, but I found other ones online that sound really cool that I plan on checking out in the weeks to come. From the music store I went to Daiso (다이소), which is like a dollar store, and bought a bath mat for our bathroom. The shower in our bathroom has a divider from the rest of the room but it does not touch the floor and the drain is just a floor drain, so water spills into the entire bathroom area and everything gets very wet, so we needed a bath mat so we didn't track water into the rest of the room.

I also decided  to go check out 그랜드 마트 (Grand Mart) which is like a Walmart. It was 6 stories tall (since it's in the city), with a grocery store, clothing, domestic goods, etc. It's about a 15 minute walk from my dorm.

We had originally planned  to go to Itaewon to see fireworks set off at the American military base, but since it was pouring rain (monsoon season), we did not feel very enthusiastic about traveling all the way there. We decided to compromise with the next most American thing we could think of: eating McDonald's.

After eating at McDonald's, the rain let up a little bit and we spent the rest of the night walking around Sinchon before turning in.
